Holden keeps getting more depressed. He calls Sally Hayes for a date. He gets a prostitute and is excited and anxious at first but then when she gets to the room all he wants to do is talk. He goes to Ackley's room with a face full of blood.
Response chapters 1-5
The theme for these chapters would be loneliness. Holden is searching for a sense of belonging, he doesn't have any real friends he is mostly a loner but he doesn't like too many of the people because he says they are phonies. Draft 1 - Gatsby
The Great Gatsby depicts the theme of the American dream perfectly because the characters have have the perfect life, have many oppurtunities for things, and are wealthy.
- In The Great Gatsby, they make it seem that their lives are perfect, on the exterior to everyone else. But in reality they're many relationships that are troubled and affairs. Tom was having an affair with Myrtle that everyone knew about, but no one said anything about it because they didn't want to start an arguement and show others their problems. "She was only extemporizing but a stirring warmth flowed from her as if her heart was trying to come out to you concealed in one of those breathless, thrilling words." (Fitzgerald, 19)
- All of the main characters in the book were wealthy. Tom, Daisy and Nick had old wealth from their family names and Gatsby had new wealth. Gatsby used his wealth to impress Daisy so he could get her back. Tom and Daisy are horrible people and when things go bad or not the way they want to go, they fall back on their money and take a trip or move, just to get away. "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy--they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money of their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made." (Fitzgerald, 183).
- Living the American dream means that one has many oppurtunties for different things and achieving one's goals. Gatsby was a man that lived by strict rules, and at the end his father said that he was gonna be successful. "Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something." (Fitzgerald, 182). Gatsby's first dream was to be successful and make lots of money but all that changed when he met Daisy, then all he wanted was to have her, which was his downfall and the reason why he lost both his success and Daisy.
- Gatsby threw his chances of happiness away when he starting lying to his friends in order to take Daisy back from Tom. Because he tried so hard to keep her in his life, he made the mistake of taking the blame for her and that was the reason Wilson went for him, and shot him. If Gatsby would have been more truthful and would let go of the past, he would have had a much more successful life and he wouldn't have been murdered like he was.

Chapter 9 - Gatsby
Abstract: Nick tries to have a big funeral for Gatsby. He tries to invite lots of people but Nick can't get anyone to come. He tries to invite Daisy and Tom but they had moved away. Nick is tired of the East and is going to move back to the Midwest. He breaks up with Jordan, then before Nick leaves he sees Tom. Tom says that Gatsby deserved to die. Nick thinks that Tom and Daisy are horrible people who think they can do whatever they want to and are protected with their money.
Response: Nick realizes that everyone in life is motivated by goals. Gatsby's wasn't to become rich and powerful but just to get Daisy back. Fitzgerald has a similar goal which was to get lots of money to impress a girl that he liked so she would marry him, and they got married because of his money. Fitzgerald related lots of his real life experiences into this book into the character of Gatsby.
Q: Why did no one want to go to Gatsby's funeral?

Chapter 8 - Gatsby
Abstract: The next night Nick goes to Gatsby's house to talk with him. Gatsby said he waited til early morning for Daisy but she never came. Nick suggests to Gatsby that he should move and forget about her. But he doesn't want to leave her. He says that they were close before he left for the war and were almost about to get married. Nick leaves for work. He couldn't concentrate on work. The story goes to George who is telling myrtle she can't keep doing what she is doing because god is watching. He thinks that whoever drove the car was the killer. He thinks that is is Gatsby, he goes to Gatsby's house, sees him in the pool, shoots him then shoots himself. Nick hurries back and sees Gatsby dead.
Response: George killed Gatsby based only on assuming that he was the murderer, if he wouldn't have rushed to get revenge and figure stuff out I think he would have shot Daisy. Gatsby didn't do anything wrong but take the blame for his love Daisy. I would have thought that Wilson would shoot Tom for the affair he was having with Myrtle. I think that Gatsby didn't care if he died or not because he got Daisy back but lost for the second time now.
Q: Why didn't Wilson look more into the death of Myrtle instead of falsly assuming it was Gatsby?

Gatsby says that Daisy has always loved him and Daisy agrees with him. Tom accuses Gatsy of bootlegging. Nick realizes that it is his birthday. Nick, Tom and Jordan see a car accident and that Myrtle was hit by a car. Nick realizes that Gatsby and Daisy hit her with Gatsby's yellow car. Tom thinks Wilson will remember the car and will assume it was Gatsby driving. Gatsby says that Daisy was driving the car when Myrtle was hit but he will take the blame for it.
Response: Gatsby and Tom were arguing a lot in this chapter. Toms says that Gatsby got his wealth by bootlegging and that Daisy loves Gatsby. Tom and Daisy's relationship is very good, Tom cheats on her then she cheats on him?
Q: Is Daisy going to stay with Tom or Gatsby?
Response: Gatsby and Tom were arguing a lot in this chapter. Toms says that Gatsby got his wealth by bootlegging and that Daisy loves Gatsby. Tom and Daisy's relationship is very good, Tom cheats on her then she cheats on him?

Chapter 6 - Gatsby
Abstract: Rumors about Gatsby begin to spread around the city. A newspaper reporter comes to interview Gatsby, but Nick interupts the interview to talk about Gatsby's past. He said that his real name was James and that he worked on Lake Superior as a fisherman. He met Dan Cody, who owned a yacht, which Gatsby worked on, and he fell in love with money and power. He was left $25,000 and dedicated himself to become a wealthy person. Nick goes to Gatsby's house and sees Tom there. Tom doesn't know of Gatsby and Daisy yet but he is suspicious of them. Gatsby throws another party and both Tom and Daisy go. Tom tells Daisy that Gatsby got his money from bootlegging, she got upset and said that he got his money from a chain of drug stores. Nick thinks that now Gatsby has Daisy, his dream is over.
Response: Nick believes that Gatsby has Daisy back, and doesn't have anything to work for now. He worked hard to get his money and power to impress Daisy and get her back, and now he has her back, he doesn't feel as happy as he thought he would. He expected too much from Daisy. He wanted things to be like how they were in Louisville.
Q: Why was Daisy so mad about Tom's comment about Gatsby being a bootlegger?

Chapter 5 - Gatsby
Abstract: Nick returns home from his date with Jordan. He sees that Gatsby's house is lite up. Gatsby approaches Nick and offers many things to him, like business opportunities. Nick realizes this is so he would set up a meeting with Daisy. Nick agrees to the meeting. Daisy comes over and Gatsby is there, for a little while it is awkward for everyone and they finally begin to talk. Gatsby says they could all go to his house, Daisy sees how nice it is and how nice all of his belongings are. Nick realizes they don't notice him anymore so he leaves.
Response: Nick did a good thing for Gatsby. Nick set up a meeting for Daisy and Gatsby so they could see each other and talk. I think Tom will start to become jealous of Gatsby now and will become angry at Nick for setting up Daisy and Gatsby. Which I don't see he would get mad at anyone else because he already cheats on Daisy all the time.
Q: Are Gatsby and Daisy going to get back together?

Nick asks him what city he is from and Gatsby says San Francisco. Gatsby talks about some accomplishments that he has done, Nick is skeptic so Gatsby shows Nick pictures to prove his story. They get pulled over, Gatsby shows the cop a white card and they are let go without getting a ticket. Nick meets Jordan and she tells him that Gatsby loves Daisy. She said that Gatsby met her when he was int he army but he got shipped out. Then she met Tom. They get a plan to get Nick to invite Daisy to Nick's house and Gatsby will be there.
Response: This is similar to events that happened in Fitzgerald's life. He was in the army and was with a woman. They were engaged but broke up because he couldn't provide for her enough money. I think that Gatsby and Daisy will get back together because it will be like what happened to him in Fitzgerald's life.
Q: Is Gatsby lying about his past? Some things don't add up. Saying from midwest but lived in San Francisco.

Chapter 3 - Gatsby
Abstract: In the beginning Gatsby is throwing a big party. He is known for putting big parties together with well known and wealthy guests. Nick is at the party and he sees Jordan there with her friend Lucille. Lucille thinks that Gatsby is some kind of German spy and has killed a man before. Nick and Jordan go out, they sit at a table where Nick sees a man that he recognizes but doesn't remember the mans name. The man says his name is Jay Gatsby. Nick notices that Gatsby tends to keep to himself and isn't a drinker. Nick begins to walk home and sees a car in a ditch, it is the same man he had seen in the library earlier.
Response: This makes Gatsby seem more mysterious to me, he throws many parties but isn't seen much around them. He isn't trying to be the center of attention even though it is his party. Jordan talked to Gatsby and said she heard something great, but it was never said what she was told.
Q: Why doesn't Gatsby want to be the center of attention at his parties? What did he tell Jordan?

They get back on the train and go to Morningside Heights where Tom has an extra apartment for his affair. There was a party and Myrtle was there. Everyone starts to drink and it gets loud. Myrtle starts talking about Daisy and then after Tom told her to stop and she wouldn't, Tom broke her nose.
Response: Tom put Nick into another awkward situtation like the dinner he went to with Daisy, Tom and Jordan. He didn't know anyone at the party. People were getting drunk and acting stupid, then he sees Tom break Myrtle's nose.
Q: Why does Nick keep going to these different places with Tom which keep turning up awkward for Nick?

Chapter 1 Gatsby
Abstract: Starts out with Nick Carraway, who is narrating the story. Dad tells him not to judge others. Story skips to summer of 1922. Nick is renting a house in West Egg, New York. West Egg is mostly for people who have gotten new wealth and haven't made a name for them selves, East Egg is for people with old wealth and have a family name that is well known. Nick visits his cousins house in East Egg, Daisy, who is married to Tom. They have an awkward dinner, Nick leaves then when he returns home he sees Gatsby.
Response: In the beginning here Gatsby I think seems like a mysterious and creepy person. He was standing near water with his arms and hands out toward the water like he was reaching for something. He lives in a large house which is gothic like. Tom and Daisy are also trying to push Jordon and Nick into a relationship.
Q: Why was Gatsby near the water holding his arms out?

Thesis -Matejka
Henry's experiences in war guided him through his journey, which led him to becoming a more honorable person.
- In the beginning of the war Henry was just a kid, and didn't know any better. When he got into his first battle he was overwhelmed, got scared, and ran. He begins to feel guilty for leaving his comrades behind and returns to the camp, but lies so they won't think he was a coward. Near the end he becomes a leader and leads his regiment with Wilson and they win battles that they were supposed to lose. " So it came to pass that as he trudged from the place of blood and wrath his soul changed." (Crane 24).
- I think that when he first joined the war, he was in a dark and cloudy part of his life. He wasn't thinking clearly about what he was doing. He ran from battle and lied to his allies about what he really did during the time that he was gone. When he starts to become a leader and does the right things even when he doesn't want to he starts becoming a better person and goes into the light, and at the end of the book he sees the light come through the clouds. "He saw that he was good. He recalled with a thrill of joy the respectful comments of his fellows upon his conduct." (Crane 24).
- At the end of the war Henry's morality had changed from where it was at the beginning. He started making up for his past actions against his comrades and allies. He, along with Wilson, led his regiment into battle and even if he was scared he stayed and did the right thing to help his allies win the war. He felt guilty for what he has done and realizes that he can't change the past but knows that he can choose his future and intends on doing the right thing. "Yet gradually he mustered force to put the sin at a distance. And at last his eyes seemed to open to some new ways." (Crane, 24).

Henry's Mother - Didn't want Henry to go to war. Gave Henry advice, telling him to stay a good person and not to shame his name, and to always do the right thing.
Jim - Tall soldier who died in battle. Was one of Henry's friends in the 304th.
Wilson - Friend of Henry's. Was the Loud soldier. Henry and Wilson go through many battles together and lead the regiment to many victories.

Chapter 24
Henry was told to take his regiment to the river. On the way there he was thinking to himself about how stupid he was in the beginning when he ran and how selfish he was. Henry knows that he is a changed person now and forgets about the bad things that he has done or thought about the other soldiers because they are in the past.
At the end light shined through dark clouds and I think that it symbolizes a new beginning. The dark clouds symbolize the bad things they had been through and what Henry had to overcome himself. When Henry first joined the army he was a kid, but at the end he had matured. He matured a lot because he was able to lead his regiment into victories and never ran after he returned from the woods.
Is the war over? Is Henry going to stay in the army and become a leader?

Chapter 23
Henry and the 304th are still fighting, but are fighting a losing battle. They decide to charge the enemy because they aren't able to fall back. They unit was very tired and many were wounded or dead, but Henry was able to motivate them and they charged the enemy. They were able to win the battle and after they sat and rested, and congratulated each other on a job well done.
Henry is turning out to be a great leader, he has lead two battles now and his regiment has won both even though the odds were against them. He is able to motivate his comrades so they push themselves to the limit and that is the reason why they are able to win. He and Wilson are more of leader than the actual leader of the 304th.
What caused Henry to stay in the army and actually become a leader even though he isn't as experienced as the others?

Chapter 22
Henry is in another battle now but the longer that this lasts the 304th regiment keeps growing thinner. He starts to sit back and watch the battle but does not run again because he wants to prove the officers wrong. Many of his soldiers are getting hit and are dying.
Even though Henry thinks it is wrong to run now, they should have retreated because they could come back and fight another day, but if they stay and all die then they would have been very little help at all.
With much of their unit dead, will the general and officers send more people to reinforce the 304th?

Chapter 21
The regiment returned from their victory and were proud of themselves when they were sent in with the odds against them and weren't thought of having a chance of winning. When the return other soldiers make fun of them, and they started to question their officers. Some soldiers come up and tell Henry and Wilson they are the best fighters on the regiment.
When the 304th returned from the battle they were made fun of by the other soldiers. I think they should have been praised for their victory when they were fighting against the odds. They made the general and other officers eat their words because they won the battle and didn't all die, but an officer called them mud diggers and never praised them for their victory.
Why does the officer call them mud diggers instead of praising them on their well fought victory?

Chapter 20
Henry and his regiment fall back behind some trees and are covered from the gunfire. People are fleeing now and he tells them to stay and fight, that if the enemy wants a victory they have to fight for it to earn it. The regiment fights and is victorious and drives back the enemy. The regiments morale is lifted after this victory that was supposed to be a loss.
Henry has stepped up greatly now and has lead his unit into victory even though the general said it was going to be a loss. The morale of the 304th after this was greatly lifted and Henry has become a great leader. He pushed the 304th to the limit and never let them back down and that is why he won the battle for them.
How many soldiers did the 304th lose during that battle?

Chapter 19
Henry and Wilson are angered by what the general said about their regiment. They go back to the camp and tell their unit that they are about to charge. They keep the information that the general and officers said to themselves. The regiment starts to charge toward the enemy and many of them in front of Henry are being shot, but they keep pressing foward. The regiment's flag carrier was shot and Henry and Wilson pick up the flag and continue charging the enemy.
Henry has changed entirely since he ran. When the flag carrier was shot he picked up the flag and kept moving foward with his regiment. He went from being a coward to couragous and is now even leading his troops. He wants to prove the general wrong about what he said how the 304th was bad.
Even though they knew they would most likely be killed, why did Henry and Wilson lead the 304th into the charge?

Chapter 18
Henry goes to search for a stream to get water. They can't find any but the come across an area where they can see a majority of the battlefield. As the general and some other higher ranked officers walk by Henry overhears them talking about what is the worst regiment in the army and they say that it was the 304th, Henry's regiment, they said that they do not fight well.
I think that the general is going to sacrifice the 304th regiment for something because he said that they weren't needed that much. I guess in the general's eyes, he must do whatever it takes to win even if that means sacrificing a whole regiment to be a sort of decoy while the rest of the army goes somewhere else.
Why do the higher ranked officers wish to sacrifice their own regiments to a battle they won't be able to win?

Chapter 17
After Henry's regiment waited for the battle to begin, they start fighting and Henry didn't run away this time. After the battle ends he hears an ally laughing, then he realizes that the battle was over and he was shooting at nothing. The soldiers talk about how many soldiers the enemy has lost and how good of a job they have done.
Henry stepped up in this chapter and proved to himself and the other soldiers that he wasn't going to run, and he stayed and fought. He hasn't gotten much respect from the other soldiers but I think that will change now because he showed himself in battle. He seemed to be in the red rage, because when the battle was over he was still shooting and wasn't stopping for a while.
What made Henry stay this time and not run like before?

Chapter 16
Henry's regiment is taken through some trenches. He sees enemy soldiers, and he and his regiment are taken to the forest. He complains that the reason they have lost battles was because of their leaders. A soldier makes fun of Henry for that statement he had made and Henry gets quiet because he doesn't want to be seen as a traitor to his army. The men are told to stop by their lieutenant and they wait for the battle to start.
I think this chapter is setting the stage for chapter 17, I think that there will be another battle coming. I still don't get why Henry is being so selfish and talking bad about his comrades and leaders because he ran from the last battle and hid in the forest.
Is Henry going to run again from this battle like he did the last ?

Chapter 15
Henry remembers the envelope that Wilson gave him to deliver to his family if he were to die, but was taken back. Henry was going to ask about it but decided not to so Wilson wouldn't ask him about the last battle they had when he fled. Henry thinks that the people that ran yesterday aren't as good as he is, He thinks he ran with dignity and the others ran wildly.
Henry feels that he is better than everyone else for fighting in one battle. He isn't a very honorable person because he hasn't done a whole lot for the majority of the war. He shouldn't be so selfish and think he ran with dignity and that he is better than the other soldiers who ran, because he did the same thing they did.
Why did Wilson take his letter back? Does he not trust Henry anymore?

Chapter 14
Henry woke up in the morning. He could hear a battle going on in the distance. He looks around and thinks to himself that he is surrounded by dead people but its just the other people in his camp. Henry and Wilson talk about the battle. Henry tells Wilson that Jim has died, and Wilson says that in the last battle half of the soldiers were killed. Wilson said they went into the woods but are coming back, just like Henry.
When Henry was told that the other soldiers left and went into the woods like he did, he didn't feel as bad about himself but still knew that he shouldn't have left his comrades. Henry knows he made a mistake, but vows to himself that he will be more couragous from now on.
How come Wilson is being more of a sensitive person instead of a loud person like he was earlier in the story?

Chapter 13
Henry is walking to the camp where his soldiers were and was scared that they would look down on him because he fled from the battle. He goes past some soldiers who were sleeping then a familiar voice tells him to stop, it was Wilson. he told Wilson that he was shot after being "seperated" from his regiment. He went to the corporal and he says that the bullet only grazed his head. Wilson helps Henry by giving him a blanket and a wet cloth.
When Henry returned to camp he was lucky that the night guard was Wilson because he was Henry's friend. Wilson gave him something to drink and a blanket so he could get to sleep, he helped Henry after he fled in battle.
Did Wilson know that Henry left? If so, why is he being so helpful to him now?

Chapter 12
Henry sees a battlefield and sees his army being overwhelmed by the enemy army. They were being charged and Henry panics. He comes across a soldier fleeing and tries to stop him but the soldier hits him with his gun. He meets a stranger who tells him the way back to his camp, but when the stranger leaves he realizes that he never saw his face.
The man that told Henry the direction to the camp was very calm. If he were just in battle wouldn't he be shakey and paranoid? How come Henry never seen the mans face either? If you were talking to a person how could you not see their face.
Who was the man Henry was talking to and why was he so calm.

Chapter 11
Henry hears another battle going on. Henry says that he wanted to go fight but he wasn't prepared to because he had no rifle. Henry wants his allies to lose so he has a reason and excuse to use because they lost. He then calls himself selfish for saying those things. He is ashamed of himself and scared that if he returns to his armies camp that he will be called a coward.
I understand why Henry didn't go into battle, he was exhausted and had no gun. But he still could have been a help somehow by just sitting back and helping wounded soldiers or something, that way he wouldn't be seen as much a coward as he already is.
When is Henry going to man up and help his comrades in battles, and not run?

Chapter 10
A wounded man shows up and was surprised on how strong Jim was to be able to run with how bad his wounds were. They walk away from the corpse and the wounded man feels bad for Henry because Jim was his friend. Henry thinks that the wounded man is going to die but the man says that he won't die because he has a family back home, and the wounded man thinks that Henry is a friend of his. Henry leaves the wounded man behind, he thinks that if left alone the man will die. The man calls for Henry to come back but he just keeps walking away.
Henry left a man who needed help because he would die if he didn't have the help. Henry hasn't been a big help to the army because he runs from battle and now won't help a dying soldier even though it is the right thing to do. Henry needs to stop thinking only about himself, stop being so selfish, and learn that he has to help others in order to help his army's cause.
Why does Henry continue to disobey his mother's request and not do the right things to help his alies.

Chapter 9
Henry goes away to avoid meeting with the injured soldiers again. He is jelous of the injured soldiers because they have a wound to prove that they had stayed and fought for their army, he called their wounds the red badge of courage. Henry sees a man and realizes that it is Jim, Jim tells Henry that he has been shot. Henry tries to get Jim away but Jim runs and then just drops dead.
Henry saw the casualties and effects war has when he seen Jim die. Henry got angry after Jim died, he has seen many dead people before but it didn't affect him as much as seeing a friend die. Now Henry wants to get a red badge of courage, because he thinks that he will get more respect if he gets wounded. This sounds like he is going to purposely get hurt later in the book.
What was the reason why Jim ran when Henry was trying to help him, was it because Jim thought he was running away from battle like Henry has?

Chapter 8
Henry hears a battle going on and goes to check things out. He meets wounded soldiers walking along a road, and starts to talk to one of them, who talks about the courage of the army and pride of staying to fight and not abandoning your allies. He asked Henry what was wrong with him, why he wasn't fighting, and Henry ran.
The soldier that Hentry talks to in this chapter is what he wants to be like, able to have the courage to stay in a battle and not run. The conversation that Henry and the soldier had will have a great impact on Henry's thoughts of running and he will want to be seen as couragous and he won't run anymore.
If Henry doesn't want to fight anymore why does he go to the battle when he hears it.

Chapter 7
In this chapter Henry is having a difficult time taking in what happened in the battle he was just in. He thinks that the people who stayed to fight and didn't run were stupid for not running. He believes that if they were to run they would live to fight another day, instead of dying and be no use at all. Henry comes across a dead body that has his same uniform on, when he sees it he runs away.
I think that Henry feels guilty for not staying for the battle and leaving his allies behind. When he seen the dead body in the grove I believe that he saw death and that is the reason why he ran from that as well.
Why does Henry tend to run alone when he runs away instead of going with a buddy?

Chapter 6
The youth feels excited that he fought off the enemy army and didn't run so the "supreme trial has been passed." But soon after an ally soldier yells and more enemies come rushing back. The youths regiment was outnmbered and tired from the first battle they couldn't hold off the enemy, then they got reinforcements and defeated the rebel army again.
I thought it was courageous for the youth's regiment to stay and fight even though they were outnumbered and tired from the previous battle that they had fought against the rebel army. And because they stay and fought they held the rebel army back long enough to get reinforcements and defeat the rebels once again.
How did the youth's regiment hold off the enemy army, while they were outnumbered and some of their allies were fleeing because they thought they wouldn't be able to hold the enemy back?

Chapter 5
The youth was thinking about things that happened in his past as if life was flashing before his eyes, then a soldier yelled that they enemy was approaching. When the enemy was running at them the regiment got the red rage. Some people in the youth's regiment tried to run but the lieutenant stopped them. The youth's captain dies. The youth's company fought off the enemy charge.
This was the youth's first battle and he didn't run. I thought that he was courageous for not running like some of the others in his company and fought off the enemy ambush.
Why did Henry not run if he didn't want to be in the army anymore?
Chapter 4
The beginning of the chapter the soldiers come upon a battlefield and they line up and start talking about rumors that are going around. Then it got silent and enemy soldiers started to run at them and they started to battle.
I thought it was kinda funny when the liutenant got shot in the hand that his soldiers laughed a little bit at him, but what I didn't get was it talked about fleeing soldiers but never specified who they were, was it the youth's army that was fleeing or the enemy army.
Which army was fleeing from the battle?
Did the youth run?
Chapter 3
They soldiers have been marching for a long time and grew tired. One morning the youth was woken up by the loud man and they started marching again and came upon a battlefield, when the youth seen this he wanted to leave but he couldn't because he was trapped in the middle of the regiment and had no where to go but foward with the other soldiers, then they came upon the body of a dead soldier.
I thought that the dead soldier was a foreshadow of what was going to happen to the youth. He didn't want to be in the war anymore and wished that he never enlisted because he knows now the penelties of war.

Chapter 2
Why are there many rumors going around the camp?
Who is the youth?
Who is Wilson?
A messenger comes and gives the general a message. A tall soldier and another get into a fight. A fat soldier attempted to steal a horse but a girl stopped him and they started to fight then other military people came to break up the fight and helped support her against the man.
This chapter was confusing at times and I didn't understand much about what was going on. I liked when the fat man tried to steal the horse but then got beat up by the girl.

Chapter 1
The setting of the story is during the civil war about a boy named Henry, who finds a path up the river that leads behind the enemy army, while washing his clothes in the river. He tells his mom that he wants to join the army but she said no and not to speak anymore about it. The next day Henry goes into town and enlists to the army. He tells his mother that he enlisted and she tells him to be a good person like his father was. Henry meets Jim, a loud man and a youth, who are talking if Henry's regiment will fight or run. Jim says that if the people will fight he would fight.
Who is the loud man and the youth and why didn't they give their names?
